Four times during the year the Southend Slot Club suspends its regular Tuesday race evenings and holds a different night of racing. For the Autumn event in 2017, one of our members, Graham Robinson, organised a different sort of race evening for us.
Fifteen members came along and Graham divided us into five teams of three. The decision was taken to race cars from the World Sports Car Championship, limiting the cars to the period up to 1975. Teams could run two or three different cars or could all drive the same car as required.
Any motor could be used but these were limited to 25,000 rpm.
As may be well known these days, Slot.It have produced a version of the Matra 670 that was very successful at Le Mans in the early 1970s and this car has a performance level some distance above the other cars in its class, so, understandably this type of car was a big favourite and was run by three of the five teams. Mark Nicholson was able to get his Lola T.70 coupe around the Southend circuit in a pretty competitive manner but by and large, Matras ruled.
Although it was a team competition every driver completed three eight-minute runs, with the total number of laps completed by the three team members being the deciding factor in the final results. However, as each driver ran for 24 minutes, it has been possible to produce an individual driver result as well as the team result. Both results are included here.
