For the second time this year Southend Slot Racing Club arranged an evening of racing that is different from our normal club night format. The idea is to choose one of the groups of cars from those we normally race, lay them out on a numbered board and then once the computer has determined who is to race in each heat, the four drivers then roll two dice and have to race the car that is on the numbered space that the two dice add up to. The one proviso being that a driver is not allowed to race one of his own cars. If his roll adds up to a number that has his own car on that space, he rolls the dice again. Also, drivers were asked to do their best to remember which cars they had raced during the evening so that nobody drove the same car twice. The cars we chose this time were those from our Modified NASCAR class. This proved to be an excellent choice because almost without exception, the quality of the cars was very consistent, meaning that most of us had good cars to drive most or all of the time. After each heat the cars are rotated with no car being placed on space #1 which cannot be chosen as two is the minimum number that can come up with two dice. Even so, it is surprising how often some cars are used and how little running other get. Here are the cars from the NASCAR Roulette night on 20th October. |

Apart from one absentee our full regular membership was present, although sadly, this amounts just nine these days, so there were eight devoted slotters there and ready to go at 7.30 p.m. As you can see, there are a couple of 'doubles' and a couple of real oldies, both of which run superbly, thanks to expertise of Richard Mack, #3 and Alan Shawe, #17. As on the regular NASCAR night, there was much hilarity whenever the green and yellow car, #97, owned by Noel Taylor, was on the track as it is so noisy that normal conversation has to cease. Almost all of us found its presence on the track to be very amusing, save Alan, who has a very different opinion! The quality of driving was very high - as it always is at the Southend club - with one 6 minutes heat being completed by four drivers with only one driving error over the whole heat. Poor Alan saw one of his cars break a guide post and another older style car which was substituted later in the evening, keep having the body come loose during racing. The driver of these cars shall remain nameless in order to maintain anonimity. It was expert racer Richard Mack who came out on top over the 24 minutes of driving, but not by a huge margin, with 2nd, 3rd and 4th places being separated by a total of just four track sections or in other words, 4 meters. A word should be said for Tony, who was severely handicapped by car problem on his first run, without which, he would surely have completed at least five or six more laps.
