At least twice every year Southend Slot Racing Club have an evening of racing that is different from the normal club night format. The idea is to choose one of the groups of cars from those we normally race, lay a dozen of them out on a numbered board and then once the computer has determined who is to race in each heat, the four drivers then roll two dice and have to race the car that is on the numbered space that the two dice add up to. The one proviso being that a driver is not allowed to race one of his own cars. If his roll adds up to a number that has his own car on that space, he rolls the dice again. The cars we chose this time were the Slot-It Group C sports cars. After each heat the cars are rotated so that different cars are placed on space #1 and thus cannot be chosen as two is the minimum number that can come up with two dice. This guarantees a rest for each car at some point - or maybe not! Here are the cars we raced on June 30th: |

As the attendance amounted to seven members, which translates to seven heats in order for each driver to run on each of the four lanes, we decided to extend the individual heat times to six minutes per heat. Although the regulations for this class are fairly strict and therefore the car's performance should not vary very much, it's natural that some cars will be faster or handle better than others. I think it became clear during the evening that a Sauber-Mercedes was the car to have, seeming to handle much better than the Porsches. Happily there was very little in the way of damage with everyone being aware that they were driving other people's cars. One lost rear wheel, one loose body and a knocked-off rear wing were the only notable 'accidents' following 42 minutes and 955 laps of racing. Here is the result of a very enjoyable evenings racing:
